Natalia Kozieł-Kalliomäki

I am a visual artists and film-maker. I stand knee deep with handsfull in photo-sensitive film and print-making adventure. I am Polish original, living, working, creating and having fun in Helsinki. Heading for the moon!

I entered film through studding painting and printmaking. Today, I blend experimental film and print practices in the works that are oscillating between different scales: from short 16mm films, looped analog film installations and big live spectacles of expanded cinema performances.

In work with motion picture film, I am excited in exploring the substance of print and power of simple optical tricks. I am using outdated darkroom technologies, experimenting with alchemy of film processes, playing with mechanics of 16mm film camera, and machinery of film projectors, slide and old school-type overhead projectors. I am fixated on paper folding and cut-outs, that I often use when producing film. Overhead projector became my beloved and central instrument for shadow play and hand puppetry when performing live with film.

My works are often standing at the borderland of film and theatre, where I examine the sensation of synaesthesia - the neurological crossovers like feeling the color or seeing the sound. I want to uncover how traditional film projection can be reinvented to produce immersive stories within static and motion pictures, where simple illusions become enigmatic and impossible gets present.

WHY?

I'm on a quest to look for a magic in the simplest mechanisms that can be found in film, print and the humble fold of paper to bring a sense of deep wonder, pause and a smile, especially in the current times of what’s unsure.
