Hello in October!
Is it possible to capture midnight sunbeams to your pocket, storage them over the summer – and finally, release and share them with the world when the autumn hits the darkest? THE SUN RAY HUNTER can – and that's me, printmaking artist Natalia Kozieł-Kalliomäki, with everlasting quest to harness centuries old low-tech to the service of the smile!
THE SUN RAY HUNTER is a project of building a solar inventory – a record of the sun traces collected from different countries – by using one of the earliest processes known in the history of printmaking: the cyanotype method, commonly known as the sun printing.
In the period of six months, I have visited fifteen different places in eleven countries. I travelled through the peaks of Lapland to the warm rocky coasts of Croatia, from the long highways of Germany and the green hills of Belgium to the whiteheads on the coastline Bornholm. Thanks to the cyanotype, I have managed to collect and bring back to Helsinki sun beams captured only on a small piece of paper. I checked how the sun looks and reacts in different places. Each paper is an accurate record of the moment and the weather conditions preserving the time I was there.
Now, when we miss the light the most, I want to share these files with you!
On October 15th come and visit the YÖ gallery, Lönnrotinkatu 33 (HKI) and treat yourself with a piece of sun. Take it with you and save it in your pocket. Use it always when you need an extra load of light.
This project is an experiment and an attempt to save for a longer time what is intangible. Through the form of shearing I want to evoke a strong feeling of connection and coexistence-meeting to which I want to invite you.
